"With the Dawn Rejoicing" Book Review by Joanne Bennardo
Immediately after reading this book, I sent a congratulatory email to Sister Melannie. She replied, “When I first became ill, I felt I had joined a large ‘club’ who suffer from chronic and progressive illness. I hoped my simple words might somehow speak to them since I was now one of ‘them’.”
These words, like the entire book, resonate with me. I joined the ‘club’ about a year ago. Whatever specific diagnosis or name is given to pain, the commonality is its ever-present voice and its transformative ways. Sister’s book is broken down into small chapters which reflect the questions which
pain inevitably brings. She addresses not only the practical aspects of disease, like finding a “new normal,” and persisting through setbacks, but also the merits of being broken and vulnerable through the grace of pain.
Sister urges her readers to “dialogue with pain” in order to uncover God’s wisdom. Further, she reminds us of the healing words of Pope Benedict XVI: “Anyone who really wanted to get rid of suffering would have to get rid of love before anything else, because there can be no love without suffering.” This is the paradox, beauty, and hope of the Paschal Mystery.
I invite anyone seeking metanoia or conversion, to realize God’s healing offered With the Dawn Rejoicing when we surrender our physical pains and emotional concerns in prayer. St. Paul reveled in his “weakness [which allowed] God’s power to work in him.”
Sister Melannie and I are now feeling much better due to what she names, “modern medicine.” I ask that you remember in your prayers those around the world who suffer, but are unable to access medical assistance and pharmaceuticals.
